Chapter 4 – Something Awakens continued…

 Something Awakens

A misty haze overshadows the room and although the experience is surreal, I remain very much aware of my surroundings.  An electrical current continues to surge through my body and is pulling me back toward the portal that remains open just beyond my reach.  If I could escape this nightmare I would turn and exit through the portal, never to seek the unknown again.  However a pair of dark olive colored hands maintains a tight hold of my shoulders.  I stand face to face with a supernatural creature with whom I am unable to communicate with.  I am frozen in fear and far removed from my colleagues and the underground fortress that led me to this place.  Terrified that once I leave this room I will have no way of finding my way back.  I only pray that my colleagues do not try and follow me.  Whatever happens, I know that I am on my own!  I stand silent, trying not to utter a sound.  I continue to focus on my breathing and refuse to show the fear that now envelopes my entire being; instead I wait for my captors to initiate the first move…

As the others try to make sense of the complex computer system, I make my way over to the fixed panel where the creature disappeared.  First I run my hand along the edges, then across the inside portion of this massive fixed plate.  As I do so, my hand pushes through disappearing before my own eyes. I immediately pull my hand back, only to repeat this action several times.  I ask myself if what I am witnessing is real, or is it an illusion put in place to ward of any unsuspecting visitors?  Still I must know, I did not come this far to run away; besides chances are none of us are leaving this place.  All that is left now is too peer into this void or to retreat, never to know what awaits on the other side.  Dr. Lutz catches sight of me as I challenge my fears and finally muster the courage to see our inevitable fate. Realizing what I am about to do the doctor shrieks “No”, but it is too late!  I place my head beyond the room that exists beneath our world and as I do so I am pulled into another realm, thus finding myself in another room; one that is beyond the grips of reality.

The presence of the creature was made real by the hold he had on Dr. Lutz, still he was somehow able to cross beyond a fixed panel.  His body dissipated beyond our grasp.  Samuel and I take account of the room, while Josef attends to Dr. Lutz.  The Doctor is battered and bruised but he is no worse for ware.  Samuel concerns have become a reality for all of us; we fear that we will never leave this vast underground cavern.  Here lies something greater then ourselves and what we uncovered is not of our world.  The computers are so technologically advanced, that they are way beyond the working knowledge of the four of us.  We dare not touch anything, as our actions may initiate something we cannot stop…

The hand reached down from steel rafters that support a massive vaulted ceiling.  This is not the same beast we encountered earlier. This creature has limbs and can stand erect and has taken hold of another member of our exploration team.  Samuel readies his weapon and raises it slowly trying not to alert the attention of the creature.  The Creature looks into the eyes of Dr.Lutz before tossing him to the ground like a rag doll, he then jumps onto the floor and takes account of the room.  This creature is large and stands well over seven feet tall and fixes his gaze upon Samuel.  I whisper to Samuel to wait, “your single action will be certain death to all!”  Samuel keeps his weapon pointed at the creature; his blackened eyes pierce though us and then he slowly turns and walks toward a  fixed panel on the wall before disappearing from our sight?

The cavern is unlike the others, it is a room contained unto itself.  Computer like panels illuminate the walls and elaborate terminals are methodically placed throughout the room.  A faint beeping sound attracts the attention of Dr.Lutz and lures him to move toward it.  As he steps beyond the threshold, Samuel eyes scan the room.  Being aware of the dangers that lurk within, Samuel screams no; but his voice falls upon deaf ears.  As Dr.Lutz leans forward to investigate, a large arm reaches down from the ceiling and takes hold of the doctor in it’s large claw like fingers…

Chapter 4 – Something Awakens

Something Awakens

The passage narrows thus only allowing us to walk in single file.  Knowing that we cannot escape the depths by means of which we came, we continue moving forward.   Samuel has taken the lead; his every step is met with great caution. We do not want to upset the order of things we have yet to understand.  Banded together we step into one another’s footprints. Just ahead is what appears to be a doorway, as Samuel steps beyond the threshold he gasps.  Something awakens!  It is here that we discover that which is not of our world and now there is no turning back…

Chapter three continued…

The Nesting Ground

We wake to find that Mathias’s condition has deteriorated, his breathing is shallow and he is unresponsive.  The doctor cannot be moved, and unfortunately we cannot stay here.  Doctor Simpson agrees to stay behind and care for Mathias. “You know where to find me,” he states. “Besides Mathias has no chance if left alone.  I will wait here for your return.”  Before parting Dr. Simpson grabs hold of my arm, “Tedesco,” he demands.  “Just promise you will not forget about me?”  I look into the doctors eyes and affirm, “I will not leave you here, I will come back for you.”  With that, Samuel, Josef, Dr.Lutz and myself turn and begin to delve further into the unknown.

The Nesting Ground

Samuel and I continue to lend aide to Mathias.  However his compromised condition is slowing us down and making this undertaking virtually impossible.  Nevertheless it is agreed upon and we will not abandon him.  Unlike the other tunnels this one offers no threat. “We can rest here for a while,” affirms Samuel,  “but we must resume our quest in a few hours.  Doctor Mathias is not doing very well and we will reassess the situation in a few hours after we have all had a chance to rest.”  No one knows what exists beyond the vents, and if in fact the Cicadas were engineered, that what manner of being created such a beast?

The Nesting Ground

The vent acts as an air chamber circulating the gas that is emitted by the Cicadas and funneling in fresh air.  Could these creatures have been dormant all this time waiting for a single act to wake them?  Each of these massive creatures bare the same markings as seen throughout the mine.  They have been engineered and bred for a greater cause.  How long have they slept beneath the earth, and what have we unknowingly awakened?  We travel through a maze of tunnels that has endless fractures.   Mathias can no longer keep up the pace, he is pale and has a fever.  The wound continues to bleed and is showing signs of infection.  Mathias is complaining that the wound burns as if on fire; and I fear that if he doesn’t get help soon he will not survive.  After assuring that we are somewhat free of the Cicada Dr. Simpson our teams medical doctor attends to Mathias, “this may buy us some time,” he states; “but without proper medical assistance, I’m afraid that the doctor will never leave this God forsaken place.”

Chapter three continued…

The Nesting Ground

The frenzied Cicadas overwhelm the entire room.  Samuel motions for us to follow him, and directs us into a vent that feeds the chamber.  After removing a grate we quickly step inside the vent and begin to crawl beyond the space; fortunately with the help of Doctor Mathias we secure the grate before any Cicada have a chance to enter the exhaust.  Mathias tells me to follow the others; he wants to make sure that the grate is secure. As I turn away, a Cicada extends his Proboscis through the grate and takes hold of Mathias.  The hungry Cicada begins to feed and the doctor calls out in agony.  With the help of Samuel we are able to pull the doctor away from the creature and the Cicada releases his hold.  However Mathias is left bloodied and in shock.   We do not know the extent of the injuries he sustained, but we must move beyond the vent before we can offer him any help.
