Chapter 5 – A Plague Upon Mankind continued….

A Plague Upon Mankind

This time I choose to stare back into the creatures eyes, if my fate is to end at their hands, then I no longer need fear them. Knowing, releases one of their fear and so I challenge his stare and asked not how, but when will my usefulness expire. The creature laughs at my complacent attitude and remarks; “perhaps there is more to your species then originally thought? I sense that you are not afraid and that you now feel empowered. You have not seen Dr.Simpson, he is no longer the man you once knew. He is a grouse manipulation of your human form. This is how your species will end, less then human! We will leave you with nothing and take all that we are responsible for, and like animals you will graze the land and feed on the carcasses of those who were lucky not to survive the plague.” My eyes widen and I look away. “How empowered do you feel now?” Scoffs the creature. “Has your fear returned?”

As I lie upon the cold, hard table I focus my thoughts upon the ceiling tiles; counting each one in an attempt to clear my mind. With my thoughts blocked from the creatures, I turn my hands from side to side in an effort to loosen the restraints. If I am able to free even one hand, I will have a chance. I know not what waits outside this room, but to remain here means certain death, and it is not my own mortality that haunts me; rather the preservation of mankind that must be protected. If we fail as a species, may it be by mistakes made by man himself, and not the strong-arm of those who see us as nothing more then a failed science experiment! After hours of struggling my wrists are raw and blistered and I notice that the play on the restraints have loosened. If I continue to twist my hands a little longer, I will be able to gently ease one free. However before I am able to do so, I feel the bone chilling stare of the creatures gaze…

A Plague Upon Mankind

These hostile creatures want to destroy all traces of their civilization and their contributions to mankind. They do not want men exploring their origin or searching for them. In order to stop mans obsession with powers beyond the capabilities of our human form; they will release a plague upon the earth. They who were once our teachers have set out to destroy us. By their own hand they will unleash hell; the Cicada will rise from their dormant slumber and carry with them an epidemic capable of destroying mankind. Then they will crush this temple and all that lie beneath it. They have already exposed William to the virus and have been calculating the effects it will have on the human population. Should this experiment fail, they will use me to gain a better understanding of human DNA and the effects this virus has on our kind. As I try and grasp all that has happened, William screams out; “We are not your enemy! You who have authority over our kind need not destroy all that you created. Leave this place and take that which is yours, but leave man to continue on his life’s path.” The creatures ignore William’s pleas as they continue to inject him with the serum. Once again William cries out, however this time he calls to me. “Tedesco, can you hear me? Do not try and save me! There is no cure known to man; nor can man stop the spread of this disease. You are mans last chance, the future rests within you.” I hear his words and understand the enormous task before me, but my wrists and ankles are bound and I am unable to free myself. How then can I possibly stop what has already been started?

After stating her intentions the creature walks from my sight. I begin to focus and call out for answers, after all what have I too loose. My cries are countered by a familiar voice. Dr. William Simpson was captured after Mathias lost his will to survive; while alone in the tunnel he was the first to meet our hostile host. The doctor was brought to this place so that they may learn; I on the other hand was an unexpected bonus. They had hoped to seal us within the computer room, entombing us for all time. But I found the portal before the room was sealed and now I will face the same fate as Dr.Simpson. William is clearly agitated, he warns me of the torture that I am about to endure. He screams out in agony and tells me that it is too late for him, but that I should make every effort to return to the caverns before they unleash their fury upon the land…

The creature speaks to me in monotone verses and makes clear the intentions of her species. “Those who searched these caverns before you have never made it passed the threshold.  You were the first to do so and because of this, you have caused unforeseen consequences and sadly those who traveled with you have all been exterminated; that is all except one other.  You have heard the anguish in his cries and he will suffer! You who have seen the other side will not perish, but will join us and we will learn from you. We will see through you what our gifts have taught your species, should you refuse; you will join your colleague in his suffering.” My mind spins out of control with the fear that the creature and I are connected in thought; I allow no emotion to pass between us.  I am alone and separated from all that I have ever known, and I may never be part of the human race again…

I try to speak but my words are stifled, I want to scream but cannot.  A sharp pain radiates inside my head impeding my thoughts and then the voice continues. “Do not interrupt me, for what I say must be understood!  Your kind has spoiled our culture. You have taken our knowledge and manipulated it to fulfill your own desires. Your world would have been our homeland had there been adequate vegetation.  Our nourishment became toxic when implanted in your earth and we were forced to find another galaxy and planetary system comparable to our own.  Before leaving we gave man the gift of knowledge and the ability to develop and grow.  But man is selfish and he misused this knowledge, thus it was decided that our worlds should never merge and the portal that connected our worlds was closed.  We left behind guardians to protect the portal; those are the creatures that took the lives of Ms. Sanchez and Doctor Mathias. They were left here to stop your kind from ever entering our realm, but once your search party made it past their nesting ground you broke the shield that protected the portal.  It was you that brought us back to the world we left behind!”

As her thoughts speak to me, they are transferred into my mind. “You understand my curiosity?” she states.  “Why would you choose to enter a world that has been closed to your kind for thousands of years.  Long before modern man occupied your planet we came here to cultivate and bring forth intelligent life.  Sadly your planet was unpredictable and over time your atmosphere proved to be toxic to my people.  Before leaving, we gave your people gifts of wisdom and education. What your people chose to do with such gifts is no longer our concern. When we left, we took men with us; they were sacrificed in order to maintain peace with our superior race.  It was our intention to study and to strengthen our own life form for whence we return. What was discovered is that we cannot duplicate your internal formula. The very life breath that allows man to survive on earth is vastly different from our own biological make-up and our worlds cannot be as one. We choose to never return and closed all portals to our realm, however cosmic interference awakened our guardians and activated our dormant underground sanctuary.  We did not want man to enter our world; this action, your action will bring death and destruction to the multitude. We are here to stop you and your kind.  We only came back to destroy what we created thousands of years ago.”

The binds that constrain me make it impossible for me to move. I stare blankly into the ceiling above.  With only the ability to move my eyes I capture the size and scale of the room that I am bound to.  I hear the rustle of instruments off in the corner and quickly close my eyes hoping the being will perceive me as sleeping.  Unfortunately this is not enough to deter her actions and she subsequently makes her way over to the table that holds me captive.  Standing above me, I feel the shadow of her movements across my body.  Then her cold hand manually lifts my brow.  Staring into my eyes I am frightened beyond all comprehension; for alas the moment has come.  Her frame is well over seven feet and her face is accented by her large blackened oval eyes and oversized frontal lobe that dwarfs her nose and mouth.  Her skin is dark olive and seems to change tone according to her mood. Then it is heard, not by word of mouth, but by shared thought between us.

My eyes pan the room and I am careful too make note of every detail.  In the distance I hear the moans of another in distress, and I see a shadowy figure being led by a creature that resembles the one who restrains me.  It is at this moment that I make the decision to try and escape through the portal that brought me to this place. Thus I take a deep breath and tell myself that on the count of three I will break free.  As I begin to count I feel a flood of emotions rushing through my body, as if my entire life is being replayed and every moment relived.  Then there is silence and I wake to find myself strapped to a table with electrodes attached to my head and chest.  I can only imagine how long I have been here. What felt like moments could have been a lifetime?  Is this the culmination of my life’s work?  How could I have been so selfish, when I know that some things are better left alone?  Has my persistence led me to that which I cannot control?  As a result have I become nothing more then a Lab-rat; destined to entertain a species of higher intelligence?  I have so many questions, but only my own voice to guide me. I would scream, but then who would hear my cries for help?  I am here and I am alone!  Now I must fight to return to the land of my father. For it is my responsibility alone to make sure that this place remains hidden from mankind forever.  No good can come from knowledge of this place!  There is a reason this place has remained a secret and now I am certain that no one must ever know about this place.
